SAM's Modern Art Adventure [Free Activity Booklet]

Kids will embark on an art history odyssey through Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso with SAM’s Modern Art Adventure, a free booklet that breaks down Impressionism, Cubism and more through thoughtful prompts and drawing activities.

Storytime with Emma from GV Libraries

Thursday 2 July, 10am - 10.45am

Little ones will catch the reading bug with our new story time sessions in our Children’s Gallery, led by Emma from GV Library. Each 45-minute story time will begin with a lively reading by Emma, followed by a hands-on crafting activity that brings the stories to life.

Best suited to kids aged 2-6 years. All children younger than 12 years of age must be supervised by a parent/guardian at all times during their visit to SAM.

Painting Picasso Portraits

Monday 6 July, morning session 10am - 11.15am or afternoon session 1pm - 2.15pm

Learn to paint like Picasso in this Cubism-inspired workshop! In this hands-on session, kids will encounter boundary-pushing paintings by Pablo Picasso in Facing Modernity, then return to the workshop to create their own portraits full of bold colours, playful experimentation and plenty of personality!

This workshop is suitable for kids aged 5-12. All participants must be accompanied by an adult.

Picasso On The Road [Maude Street]

The SAM Van is back on the road, and this time they're coming to the Shepparton CBD! Kids and families are invited to drop in to the free hands-on workshop, where you'll be crafting Picasso-inspired portraits in celebration of the current exhibition Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso.

All ages welcome – all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Surrealist Clay Creations

Wednesday 8 July, 10am - 11.15am

Step into the strange and imaginative world of the Surrealist artists in this playful clay workshop. Kids will explore Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso before creating their own surreal clay sculptures. Expect melting forms, kooky ideas and wildly imaginative creations!

This workshop is suitable for kids aged 5-12. All participants must be accompanied by an adult.

Petit Picasso Studio for Kids

Step into a world of colours, shapes and wild creativity with Petit Picasso Studio for Kids!

Inspired by Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso, these free monthly drop-in workshops invite kids to imagine themselves in their very own artist studio, complete with an array of art materials to experiment, get a little messy, and let their creativity take over - just like Picasso did.

Drop in anytime between 10am and 12pm and stay for as long or as little as you like – no bookings required!

Guided tour of Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso

Saturday 11 July, 2pm - 2.30pm

Discover fascinating insights into the key artworks and artists of Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso with the guided exhibition tour. Led by SAM Programs Coordinator Bryony Large, these tours allow a deeper insight into the themes, historical contexts and artistic techniques on display.

This guided tour is available at no additional cost, and is included in the 2pm ticket slot on select dates throughout the exhibition. Simply purchase a ticket to the 2pm time slot and meet Bryony inside the exhibition entrance to commence the tour.
