This memorial commemorates the site of a synagogue and community hall used by 60 Jewish families who lived in the Shepparton area from 1913 to 1966.
The memorial which was unveiled in November 2015 is situated on the corner of Doyles Road and Polar Avenue, which is the site of the former synagogue and community hall.
Shepparton's Jewish heritage began with the arrival of eight immigrant families in 1913 to work in the fruit growing industry.
They purchased a 2 ha block on the corner of Doyles Lane and Poplar Avenue, Orrvale, and later bought a small house from the Stagg family which was later converted into a synagogue. A Jewish Hostel was later constructed on the site.
Weddings and bar mitzvahs were celebrated in the synagogue and social events were held in the large hostel.
By the mid 1960s, the second generation of Jewish families began moving away, mostly to Melbourne. The synagogue fell into disrepair and was demolished when the land was sold in the 1980s.
Can be seen from dawn to dusk daily.
