Factors such as physical and cognitive decline and social isolation make older people more vulnerable to abuse or mistreatment. It is important therefore that we know how to protect ourselves and our assets as we get older.
This session will equip you with the knowledge and tools required to protect yourself in the following three areas:
1. Protecting yourself against elder abuse – we will discuss the types of elder abuse, why they occur, and tips to reduce your vulnerability.
2. Protecting your health and wealth – practical guidance on how to formalise your wishes. Specifically, we will discuss Enduring Power of Attorney, Advance Care Directive, and Medical Treatment Decision Maker.
3. Protecting you right to housing – in our final topic we discuss some of your options (for example do you want to stay at home with support, move in with your family, or share your home), and practical safeguards such as the importance of agreements.
This information session is co-presented by Greater Shepparton City Council and Seniors Rights Victoria, as part of the 16 Days of Activism events offered by Greater Shepparton City Council and the Goulburn Valley Family Violence Executive.
