This will be a great chance to get together with your teammates, sports clubs, school and work community to see this award winning and game changing documentary about a team that are rewriting the rules to make football a fairer game for everybody.

Who is this screening for?

This is a FREE community screening open to people of all genders with an interest in sports, community, and inclusion. The film might be about AFL but the message is for EVERYONE in ANY SPORT.

Creating safe and welcoming spaces for people from diverse backgrounds in community sport requires commitment to changing club culture. Watching Equal the Contest can help players, clubs and communities understand some of the barriers that prevent equal access in sport.

About the event

This event is proudly brought to you by Greater Shepparton City Councils Resilience in Recovery team, Valley Sport, Greater Shepparton Active Women and Girls Network, AFL Goulburn Murray, and GV Pride. As a team we will be hosting an informal Q&A where participants can discuss the film, network and take-home practical learnings they can use to make their sporting environment more inclusive.

About the film

When a filmmaker joins a new local women’s footy club in Regional Victoria a simple desire to play becomes a complex journey of inclusion and belonging. An unexpected turn means the team has to fight to play. Their campaign challenges age old sporting traditions and joins the wider movement for gender equity.

Equal the Contest is rated M. It includes coarse language and themes that require a mature outlook. Films classified M (Mature) are not recommended for children under the age of 15.
