The Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton falls under the umbrella of the Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand, with the theme for this year’s Open Day being ‘Inspirational Plants and Inspirational People’.

The Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton (FABGS) selected the 200+ year old Grey Box tree in the Children’s Garden area as the inspirational plant. While this tree, known as the Oombli Goombli Tree, is not beautiful it certainly has character.

For inspirational people, the FABGS looked to everyone who volunteers in some way to assist the gardens. The FABGS nominated each volunteer as an inspirational person.

The Open Day includes plant sales, a gardens for wildlife display, children’s activities under the Oombli Goombli Tree, coffee van, sausage sizzle and water café. Visitors can also check out the garden’s Bird Cow, the relocated Water Wheel Flower and the amazing signage for the Care for the Rare project. Information will also be available from local environment group Environmentally Wise and Connected Communities.

While the gardens are open to the public at all times, the Open Day event will run from 10.30am to 2pm.
